Thinking About Getting Into Drone Photography or Videography? Here’s Where to Start.

If you’ve ever seen sweeping cinematic drone footage or breathtaking aerial photos of misty glens and winding rivers, you’ve probably thought: “I’d love to try that.”…you’re not alone. Drone photography and videography are soaring in popularity—and for good reason. There's something utterly magical about seeing the landscape from a bird’s-eye view. My latest video is a great example as much of it was shot on drones.

But if you're at the stage where you're curious, excited... but also a bit overwhelmed by the gear, the rules, and whether it's really "your thing," you're in exactly the right place.

❓So Where Do You Begin?

Most people assume the first step is buying a drone—but actually, that can be a big leap (and a big expense) if you’re not quite sure what to look for or whether you’ll genuinely enjoy flying. That’s why I always recommend starting with a hands-on experience first, flying one of my drones.

Before you spend hundreds—sometimes thousands—on a drone, wouldn’t it be great to know for sure that:

  • You’ll enjoy flying one?

  • You’ll feel confident understanding the controls, the rules, and what makes a great aerial shot?

  • You’re picking the right drone for your needs, not just the most expensive one on YouTube?

That’s exactly what my Drone Adventure Day is designed for.

🚁 What Happens on a Drone Adventure Day?

In short: you get to fly one of my drones, capture beautiful footage, and explore the basics of drone photography and videography—in some truly stunning Highland locations.

We’ll cover:

  • The fundamental controls and settings

  • What makes for great aerial compositions

  • The key safety and legal rules you need to know (and how to be a responsible drone pilot)

  • Whether a drone like the DJI Mini series is the right entry point for you—or if a more advanced model might be worth the upgrade down the line

But more importantly, you’ll get a feel for it all before committing to buying anything. You’ll walk away with footage and confidence, and a much clearer idea of whether this is a new hobby or skill worth pursuing further.

🛸 You Don’t Need to Own a Drone to Fly With Me

All you need is a Flyer ID, which is free, quick to obtain, and gives you the legal go-ahead to control a drone under supervision. I’ve got a handy step-by-step guide and links on how to get your Flyer ID on my drone photography page, so you’re never flying blind (pun intended).

If you have any questions about the flyer ID or anything else about booking the adventure day, just drop me a WhatsApp message and we can book in a free, no-pressure Zoom chat to talk through what your day will look like and whether it feels like the right next step for you.

🌄 The Sky's the Limit—But Only If You Start

I’ve had so many people tell me, “I’ve wanted to try this for ages, but didn’t know where to start.” If that’s you, let’s fix that. Whether you're looking to eventually shoot travel films, supplement your photography business, or simply enjoy a new creative outlet, starting with a guided experience is the smart way in.

And even if you decide not to buy your own drone yet, you’ll have had a fun, memorable day in the Highlands doing something completely different!
